DRR Leadership Alumni Meet 2025

The DRR Leadership Alumni Meet, held on 7 August 2025 in Biratnagar, felt more like a homecoming than a formal event. Women from different batches of WHDRRP’s leadership and advocacy programs traveled from across Nepal to reconnect, share their journeys, and celebrate the impact they have created in their communities. Many had not seen each other since their training sessions, and the energy in the room reflected the pride and sense of belonging that comes from being part of a shared movement.
Throughout the day, alumni shared personal stories of growth and change. Some spoke about the first time they led a municipal coordination meeting, while others described how their confidence had grown after successfully advocating for women’s participation in disaster committees. One alumna from Koshi Province recounted how she introduced gender-responsive budgeting discussions into her municipality’s annual planning process, while another shared how she had gently challenged local cultural barriers to ensure that single women and persons with disabilities were included in preparedness activities. A particularly meaningful moment came when alumni were invited to map the impact of their work over the past year. Using simple markers and chart paper, they traced the ripple effects of their activities — from training volunteers to influencing policy discussions. The exercise revealed how small, determined actions had expanded into broader changes at community and municipal levels. Many women expressed surprise at how much they had collectively achieved when their efforts were laid out visually. The gathering also included informal mentoring moments. Senior alumni sat with newer members, offering advice on navigating local politics, building relationships with municipal officers, and sustaining momentum after a successful initiative. These conversations were honest and grounded in real-world experience, reflecting the shared values and mutual support that define WHDRRP’s network. As the event drew to a close, alumni discussed their hopes for the coming year. Some expressed interest in collaborating on community-led early warning work, while others planned to co-author policy briefs or share training materials. The meet ended with a strong sense of solidarity and purpose. Many women left feeling re-energized, supported, and ready to continue strengthening disaster governance in their own communities. The Alumni Meet reaffirmed that leadership is not a one-time achievement but an ongoing journey sustained by connection, trust, and shared learning. For WHDRRP, the gathering demonstrated the lasting impact of investment in women’s capacity and the growing strength of a network that continues to push for inclusion and resilience across Nepal.
